Frequently asked questions
When does a death certificate need to be translated?
When settling an estate with assets or heirs in another country, claiming a life insurance policy or a survivor pension abroad, or registering the death with a civil registry other than the one that issued the certificate.
Is the multilingual certificate enough?
Between countries that apply the 1976 Vienna Convention or Regulation (EU) 2016/1191, often yes. Outside the European Union, and before notaries or financial institutions that require it, a sworn translation is needed.
Who signs the translation?
A sworn translator-interpreter appointed by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Their signature, their stamp and their certification attest that the translation is faithful and complete.
Can I receive the paper copy?
Yes. The standard delivery is an electronically signed PDF, valid before the Spanish authorities since 2020. If the notary or the bank asks for the paper original, add postal delivery.
